Quadrupedal Counter-Terrorism Robot Deployed for Testing in Special Forces and Frontline Units

A quadrupedal counter-terrorism robot has been deployed for testing by the South Korean Army, as announced by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) on the 12th. The robot, developed by Hyundai Rotem and Rainbow Robotics, was selected in August 2022 under a rapid demonstration project and completed development on August 5, 2023. The robot can move at a speed of over 4 km/h and can climb vertical obstacles such as 20 cm high stairs. It is equipped with cameras for surveillance and reconnaissance.

The robot will be tested over the next six months in the Army’s Special Warfare Command and a frontline division to evaluate its performance and military utility. Depending on the results, the military will decide on its adoption. The robot can be equipped with various devices, such as a remote-controlled pistol, to perform missions such as suppressing threats and conducting reconnaissance.
