National Backbone Network Capacity to Quadruple by 2030 in Preparation for AI Traffic Surge

The government plans to quadruple the capacity of the national backbone network from the current 2.4Tbps to 10Tbps by 2030 to cope with the rapidly increasing communication traffic in the AI era. One Tbps can transmit one trillion bits per second, equivalent to sending 32 high-definition movies (4GB each) in one second. The backbone network acts as the ‘highway’ of the communication infrastructure, essential for smooth large-scale data transfer.

With AI usage becoming ubiquitous and the spread of ‘physical AI’ including robots and autonomous vehicles, communication traffic is expected to grow 4 to 9 times by 2033 compared to 2023. The Ministry of Science and ICT is preparing an advanced network strategy to be announced next month, which will include backbone expansion and innovations reducing computing resource use such as GPUs for AI operations, along with domestic technology development.
